Bruce Shreves named “Lawyer of the Year” in Mediation
Best Lawyers names Lawyers of the Year from each region based on their particularly high level of peer recognition.
The following story published by Best Lawyers highlights why Mr. Shreves is considered a “Master Mediator”
Simon Peragine Smith & Redfearn managing partner and head of the firm’s construction/surety practice H. Bruce Shreves is a master mediator. Consider this: the complex construction disputes he mediates can often bring between 10-15 parties (all with competing interests) to the table, but Shreves can help negotiate a solution that everyone is satisfied with in a couple of days or less. That’s remarkable enough, but throw in the fact that some of these disputes have been going on for a decade or more and the magnitude of what Shreves is able to accomplish really becomes apparent.
“It’s a great feeling when you are able to bring resolution and closure to these matters, some of which have millions of dollars on the line,” says the lauded and well-credentialed Shreves, one of the founding partners of the firm and a frequent author and lecturer on both construction law and mediation and arbitration. “I enjoy this as much as anything I’ve done in my practice.”
For Shreves, who has handled countless construction mediations in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, what’s most satisfying is being able to create—then foster—a dynamic amongst a dispute’s parties that is most amenable to resolution. “There’s something about getting people to sit down together and really try to reach a solution that doesn’t happen over the phone,” he says. “That’s what’s really remarkable about this process.”
